A Brief History

Bank of Stronghurst

The Bank of Stronghurst was organized in 1946.  The State of Illinois granted a charter to the Bank of Stronghurst on April 24, 1946.  The Bank opened for business on April 27, 1946 with 130 depositors and $192,000 in deposits.

The original Directors of the Bank of Stronghurst were: Clarence E. Neff, Joe R. Peasley, O.W. Lauver, A.W. Nolen, M.H. Lovitt, Howard A. Smith and Wayne L. Waddill.  At the first Directors organizational meeting, Clarence E. Neff was elected President, Joe R. Peasley First Vice-President, O.W. Lauver Second Vice-President and Howard E. Grigsby was selected as Cashier.

For eighteen years, the Bank occupied the old bank building on the corner of Main and Broadway that it had purchased from Charles E. Fort.

In 1964, a new building was erected on the lot just east of the old building.  There was an addition added to the west end of the building in 1976.  In 1992, another addition was added at the west end of the building, which included office space, plus the installation of Stronghurst’s first Automated Teller Machine.  The Bank currently maintains two ATMs in the county, one at the main bank in Stronghurst and one located in The Pink in Lomax.

In 1996, the Board of Directors decided to increase our market area by opening a branch in Lomax, IL.  In the spring of 1996, we applied for permission to open a branch in Lomax, IL, purchased property, and constructed our Lomax Facility.  On November 25, 1996 we opened our first branch bank in Lomax.

In 2004, we applied for a branch bank in Dallas City, IL.  We purchased property and constructed our Dallas City Branch, which opened on November 15, 2004.

In 2005, we purchased the former bank building in Little York, IL and opened our third branch on April 4, 2005.

The Bank of Stronghurst has enjoyed steady growth, solid earnings and exceptional capital throughout its history.  As of December 31, 2009 the Bank has grown to $71,674,292 in total assets, $60,457,447 in total deposits and has total capital of $11,250,044.
